Different types of sales
Below, we describe the different types of sales out there, from B2B to customer success and business development.
B2B Internship Sales
B2B sales, also known as business-to-business sales or business-to-government (B2G) sales, is the sale of goods and services to other companies. For example, the fact that Fiks does business with other companies to put internships online can be seen as B2B. Also, for example, companies like Heineken supplying beer to catering establishments is B2B. So you are mainly dealing with contacts from other companies. The big difference with B2C is often that it is not paid from the wallet of the contact person, but by invoice to the company concerned. Relationship management is important here!
B2C Internship Sales
We just mentioned it briefly but B2C sales is a broad category that involves selling to consumers. You will sell your product or service directly to the consumer, like a car salesman or a Netflix subscription. Here, it is important that you look good to the consumer. Relationship management is slightly less important, but rather good customer service.
There are also a huge number of B2C sales jobs in the Netherlands. Already look at sectors such as entertainment (music, films), healthcare and technology, where people need help learning about these new products. Take the Apple store, for example. It's full of B2C sales people.
Customer Success
There are two variations of customer success. The first is flatly put, a piece of customer service. You often see this in b2c companies where customer service is about solving customers' problems. The second variation is technical support. You often see this in B2B because this is about complex products involving a lot of money. So technical support is really focused on helping (b2b) customers use a new product.
Customer service is almost always done over the phone, while technical support can be provided both in person and over the phone.
Business Development
Business development is a broad term that encompasses many different types of jobs. A common job title is ‘business development manager’, which describes someone who helps grow the business by building relationships and partnerships with other companies.
Business development managers often work directly with customers, but they may also be responsible for developing marketing campaigns, networking at conferences and trade shows, or acting as experts in their field (such as technology or finance).
Business development is thus a bit broader than just sales and can focus on several processes. Should you also want to take a look at business development internships, we also have these at Fiks!
Various sales internships
As described above, a sales internship can take you in many directions. There are also many different types of sales internships and positions in which you can grow. Below, we list the most common positions.
Sales Manager: This really focuses on attracting new customers. This can be outbound or inbound. Outbound means you actively seek out new customers and do outreach. Inbound means customers come to you through marketing channels and you make sure you persuade them to become customers.
Sales Engineer: You often see this in complex deals. Some companies sell products worth more than a tonne. To convince new customers then, you must also be able to go very deep into the content of the product to meet the customer's exact requirements.
Account Manager: This is more about relationship management. A company may have large customers that need to be constantly monitored. You are that customer's point of contact and make sure everything is in order. In addition, you often support the sales team.
Customer Success Manager: This is very similar to account management, but a customer success manager often comes a little earlier in the process. The moment sales connects a new customer, it is up to the customer success manager to see if they can still upsell the customer. So you can think of a customer success manager as optimising the deal and onboarding the customer.
Business Development Manager: As mentioned above, this role is often a bit broader. The focus is not only on customer or relationship management, but you actually do all sorts of things to discover new opportunities in the market.
