Communication internship
A communications professional-or trainee-is responsible for managing and directing the flow of information between an organisation and its audience. This can be both internal and external. At Fiks we always have a lot of communication placements online. This is because it is important for many companies to get both their internal and external communication right. Especially for companies that like to get into the public eye, a communications intern can be of enormous value. He or she builds strong relationships with the media, customers, employees and other important stakeholders. In addition, a communication internship often involves developing, managing and implementing a comprehensive communication plan.
In addition, should you wish to check out marketing internships or design internships, or does the direction not matter much but are you a student of the HvA and do you want to, for example Internship in the Amsterdam area, then of course you can also do that at Fiks!
Communication professionals need to be able to translate complex issues into normal ‘human language’ so that everyone involved can clearly understand the subject; they also need to know how different forms of media work best together. As an intern, you will therefore have a wide range of tasks, but it also depends on where your focus will lie during your communications internship: Internal or external communication.
Difference between internal & external communication
There are several possible internships in the field of communication. At every company they fill this role differently and different things are important, but at least we can distinguish between external and internal communication.
External communication internship
External communication is the process of communicating information about an organisation to parties outside the organisation. External communication can take place through many different channels, such as news releases, public relations, advertising and direct marketing.
So an external communications internship often involves a bit of marketing as well. Namely, you make sure that the company's message is consistent across all media, including print and social media. You then use marketing strategies to achieve your goals.
A press release is an example of external communication and is an essential part of your communication plan. It is also one of the first things journalists will ask for when you contact them. When a journalist writes about your company or product, they need additional information, such as images, background information or a link to your website - and that's where a press kit comes in.
Een mediakit is another important part of the communication strategy and can include just about anything that might be useful to journalists covering a topic related to your internship company.
Internal communication internship
Internal communication is the process of coordinating activities within an organisation. Although it may seem like a simple concept, internal communication is important for the effective functioning of an organisation.
An internal communication internship often focuses on the company and its employees. You will then interview key employees more often to find relevant stories. With this, you will work to ensure that all noses are pointed in the same direction and that internal communication is on point. In fact, this process is an important part of organisational culture and is often used to disseminate information within an organisation.
Some examples of internal communication include employee newsletters, intranet websites, or other methods used to communicate with members of the same organisation or group.
At Fiks, we'll help you find a communications internship
At Fiks, both types of internships are possible! There are always a lot of communication internships online. Most involve external communication (especially at smaller companies). At the big guys, you will often have to manage communication streams internally.
